This presentation will emphasize the crucial role of women (with a focus on Mississippi) working in defense plants across the industrial sector in WWII era America. Topics included:

  • American perception of women prior to WWII
  • Propaganda from the federal government encouraging women to join the workforce during WWII
  • The critical labor role of Mississippi women during this time
  • The impacts of women joining the workforce post-WWII

Speakers Expertise:

Dr. LaShunda Calvert is a history instructor at Hinds Community College Utica Campus. She completed a B.A. and M.A. in history at Jackson State University, and earned her Ph.D. in urban & regional planning at JSU in 2013. Calvert has more than 20 years of teaching and lecturing experience (both on and off campus) presenting to a wide range of students from Pre-K level through college.
