March 1 @ 10:00 am - March 31 @ 4:00 pm

Free

“Discovering the Soul of Oman and Mississippi” through Basel Almisshal’s Lens, is an exciting and culturally enriching exhibition that aims to transport audiences into the heart of the Sultanate of Oman through the captivating lens of the renowned architect and artist, Basel Almisshal. It seamlessly weaves together the cultural narratives of Oman and Mississippi, highlighting their shared histories of resilience, diversity, and empowerment It encompasses the following three components:

-Land: Basel Almisshal’s lens captures the breathtaking landscapes of Oman, from the undulating sand dunes and the monsoon-kissed greenery of Salalah to the Mississippi Delta’s fertile fields. Each image speaks to the awe-inspiring topographies that have silently observed the ebbs and flows of time. This segment invites viewers to reflect on the beauty of nature and how the land has shaped the cultural identities of both places.

-Sea: This component explores the profound relationships both Oman and Mississippi share with bodies of water. In Oman, the exhibition showcases shimmering seascapes and the coastal culture that has shaped the nation’s heritage. In Mississippi, the focus shifts to the mighty Mississippi River and its role in the state’s history, including the movement of goods and people during the era of slavery.

-Spirit: The “Spirit” segment delves into the heart and soul of both Omani and Mississippi cultures, emphasizing their resilience and empowerment narratives. In Oman, Almisshal’s lens brings to life the spiritual and cultural fabric that holds the Sultanate together. In Mississippi, the exhibit explores the cultural heritage of Black Mississippians and their journey toward empowerment, including their contributions to music, civil rights, and social justice movements. This component highlights the shared values, beliefs, and traditions that have been integral to the identities of both Oman and Mississippi.

The exhibition opening date is February 24 with a free, public presentation by Deborah Heard from the Hansberry Society and Fullbright fellow Ahlam Yassin for the in-gallery conversations. The talks will be moderated by IMMC’s Lina Ali and Dr. Esam Alhadi.
