The Parchman Ordeal: The Untold Story

Producer Mark LaFrancis will present one of the most significant Civil Rights injustices of that era, one barely known until only recently. A Mississippi Humanities Council Oral History Project, “The Parchman Ordeal” film tells the true story of the illegal incarceration of more than 150 young men and women in the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, Mississippi. There, they were punished, humiliated and abused for days. Their crime was trying to march for civil and voting rights. Hear from the director and producers about how they came to tell the story and the impact it has had on audiences and the community of Natchez, Mississippi8. Total Program 90 minutes (includes film and discussion). The film was turned into a book “The Parchman Ordeal: 1965 Mississippi Civil Rights Injustice” (History Press).

Speakers Expertise:

As a veteran of 23 years (active duty during the Vietnam War era and Air National Guard) and as a writer for more than 30 years, LaFrancis is professionally and personally qualified to offer what is a moving and unique presentation. LaFrancis has more than 25 years experience as a professional speaker and presenter, particularly on the topics of creative writing and journalism. With the war ever-present in our lives, his presentation of the experiences of the soldiers and their loved ones will enlighten and engage a wide range of audiences.
