MHC hiring full-time office administrator

The Mississippi Humanities Council is a private nonprofit corporation funded by Congress through the National Endowment for the Humanities to provide public programs in traditional liberal arts disciplines in Mississippi. MHC sponsors, supports, and conducts a wide range of programs designed to promote understanding of our cultural heritage, interpret our own experience, foster critical thinking, encourage reasonable public discourse, strengthen our sense of community, and thus empower Mississippi’s people with a vision for the future.

MHC is looking for a full-time office administrator to oversee its office operations and selected MHC programs. Under the direct supervision of the executive director, duties include:

  • Reception services – answering telephone and email inquiries, providing information about the Council and its programs
  • Assist with processing grant applications and awards through our database
  • Assist with administrative duties related to our Prison Book Club program
  • Coordinate annual Humanities Teacher Awards program
  • Assist with planning for annual awards dinner, board meetings, and other Council events
  • Manage donor database and assist with donor correspondence
  • Oversee office operations – supplies, equipment, etc.

The office administrator is often the first contact with grant applicants and the general public. They must be engaging, professional, well organized, and efficient. Knowledge of the traditional humanities and of nonprofit organizations is highly desirable.

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Administrative experience
  • Computer skills, including word processing and database management
  • Strong interpersonal and organization skills

Benefits include generous 401K plan and health and dental insurance. Salary contingent on skills and experience, but generally in the $38,000-$40,000 range.
