Jackson, Mississippi was established 1821 but, the first map didn’t include a cemetery. This was remedied when space was set aside for a cemetery January 1, 1823. There are 2,000 unmarked burials in Greenwood Cemetery, ¼ of which are Black. The Voices of Greenwood Tour is designed to give voice to some of the people of African Descent who are buried in the Cemetery and provide attendees a view into their lives in Mississippi.
This year we will include re-enactors to help us tell a more complete story of some of the people of African descent who are buried in Greenwood.
