The Smithsonian Institution Comes to Pontotoc

April 27 @ 10:00 am - June 9 @ 4:00 pm

Free

The Mississippi Humanities Council selected Pontotoc to be one of six communities in Mississippi to host the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit ‘Crossroads: Change in Rural America.

The Pontotoc County Historical Society will oversee this event developing a local exhibit to enhance the experience of visitors. The Society plans to work with a local company to design and create at least seven retractable banners that will tell the story of the early life of rural
Mississippi especially focusing on Pontotoc County. The banners will include pictures and brief narratives featuring early Pontotoc, agriculture, education, the humanities, industry, healthcare, and the development of downtown.

The Historical Society will loan artifacts from the museum in Pontotoc to enhance the information that is included on the banners. The Historical Society also compiled content to produce postcards and posters that will promote the Smithsonian and Pontotoc exhibits and programs.

The Historical Society currently plans to have the exhibit open to the public without charge from 2:00PM to 5:00PM on Monday through Friday each week and from 10:00AM to 4:00PM on Saturdays. The exhibit will be closed on Sundays.

This event is free and open to the public.
