“Controlling the Narrative: Chronicling Family & Communal History”

The event is two-fold, comprising a morning presentation and workshop on oral/community history and an afternoon panel on the modern legacy of investigative journalism in the vein of Ida B. Wells. Michelle Duster, an author and public historian, and the granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, will facilitate the presentation and workshop. Her presentation, called “Controlling the Narrative: Chronicling Family & Communal History”, will lead participants into a discussion of the topic. During the workshop, participants will be guided by Ms. Duster in their own individual projects. A book signing and luncheon will follow the workshop.

The afternoon panel, titled “Modern Day Lynching & Investigative Social Action”, will comprise of JSU Journalism and Media Studies faculty and Jackson area journalists, such as C.J. Lawrence, founder and CEO of Black With No Chaser. Their discussion will be on modern investigative journalism and the legacy of Ida B. Wells.

Both events are free and open to the public.
