The Long and Steamy Affair Between the Sciences and the Humanities

The speaker focuses on the historical relationship between the sciences and the humanities. Examples will include the responses of poets, philosophers, and artists to the scientific theories of Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Albert Einstein. Some have viewed the relationship a blissful, perfect marriage. Others have viewed the relationship as that of a nasty divorce. The speaker suggests that the sciences and the humanities are like two quarrelsome lovers who seek to maintain their independence, but find that they cannot live without one another.
