A History of the Guitar in Spain and Cultural Development Through the 20th Century

Over the last century, the Guitar has become one of the most recognizable and accessible musical instruments. Its origins and development lie deeply rooted in Spanish history. In this lecture recital, a concise chronological history of the instrument will be presented, including important social and political developments, as well as representative musical examples from various time periods.

Speakers Expertise:

Michael Boyd received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Guitar Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi. Presently Dr. Boyd holds the position of Professor of Guitar at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi. Michael maintains and active performing schedule in the region, and is a member of Southern Artistry, an organization designed to promote arts programs to communities throughout the southeast region. Michael is a member of the Mississippi Arts Commission Touring Artist and Education Developer Roster.
